I’ve been arrested, and I know I’m guilty. Should I still hire a lawyer?

Even if you think you are guilty of a crime, you should always hire a lawyer if you have been charged with a misdemeanor or a felony. The justice system can be complicated, and trying to navigate it alone can be overwhelming and may not work in your favor. An experienced criminal defense lawyer will know how to develop a strategy to improve your odds of achieving a favorable result. If you cannot afford to hire an attorney, you should seek representation by the public defender’s office.

Even If You Believe You’re Guilty

One important thing to remember is that according to the law, you are assumed innocent until proven guilty. Even if you believe you’re guilty, it is the responsibility of the State to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Although you may feel there is enough evidence to prove your guilt, you need the experience of a skilled criminal lawyer to analyze the factors of your case. An experienced lawyer may be able to present mitigating circumstances to the judge and/or jury that can help you. Additionally, an attorney may be able to:

  • Get you probation or house arrest rather than jail time
  • Get your charges reduced
  • Have evidence suppressed because the police obtained it unlawfully and violated the defendant’s constitutional rights
